First dental visit: how to prepare your child

When

Ideally around age 3, or once all baby teeth are in. The earlier you start, the more the dentist becomes a friend rather than an emergency.

The right words

Talk about it as a new adventure: 'let's go count your teeth'. Avoid the words 'hurt', 'fear', 'needle', even to reassure ('it won't hurt' introduces the idea of pain). Never use the visit as a threat.

What happens in the clinic

Nothing is treated on the first visit: we explore the clinic, ride the 'flying chair', watch a favourite cartoon and learn to brush. Learning together is more fun: older siblings often act as 'assistants'!

At the end every child receives their Bravery Diploma. Book by calling 051 814000.
